Sharing Our Stories: Protecting the Promise of IDEA and OSERS

Fifty years ago, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) became law. For the first time, students with disabilities were guaranteed the right to free and appropriate public education. Before IDEA, many children were turned away from school altogether. Today, that promise is at risk. With the proposed Reduction in Force (RIF) affecting the Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) threatens the foundation of IDEA, a law that opened classroom doors for millions of students who were once excluded. As we commemorate 50 years of IDEA, our nation should be strengthening, not weakening, the systems that help students with disabilities thrive.

OSERS provides essential leadership, guidance, and oversight that keep IDEA strong and ensure schools meet their obligations to every child. When those supports are reduced, families can lose access to the very help that makes inclusion possible.

At PEAL, we understand the real impact on families, students, and schools. When resources are reduced or leadership shifts, families often face new challenges in getting the services and supports their children need to learn and thrive.

Now is the time for families, caregivers, educators, and advocates to raise their voices. Sharing your story and contacting your Members of Congress can make a difference. Here are a few talking points to help you get started when reaching out to elected officials:

Talking Points for Parents & Caregivers

Introduce yourself.

“Hello, my name is [Name], and I’m a parent of a child with a disability in [City/State].”

Explain why this matters.

“IDEA ensures my child and other children have access to the education and supports they need to succeed. Without strong federal leadership through OSERS, families like mine could lose important protections.”

Make your request.

“Please protect and fully fund OSERS and the IDEA programs it supports. These services are crucial to keeping education inclusive for all students.”

Share your story.

“Because of IDEA, my child was able to [insert example—attend school, receive therapy, graduate, or find independence]. These supports make a real difference for families like mine.”

End with thanks.

“Thank you for your time and for standing with families and students with disabilities.”

As parents and advocates, our voices matter. By speaking up and sharing the positive impact of IDEA and OSERS, we help protect not just our children’s future, but everyone to ensure IDEA’s promise continues for the next 50 years.
